Electric Hot Water Systems:

In our opinion, electric hot water systems are the most efficient and economical option currently available on the market. Electric systems have a false reputation for being inefficient or expensive, which is why a lot of people invest in solar or gas hot water, but we have found that to be untrue. When paired with an off-peak tariff, an electric water heater is the cheapest option to run. It is also usually the most economical system to purchase and have installed. You can learn more about the benefits of electric hot water systems here.

Gas Hot Water Systems:

Many people consider gas hot water systems to be the most economical option in terms of running costs, but that is often untrue. If you are using town gas then your system will be economical to run, but if you are using gas bottles or cylinders then the costs of renting and refilling your gas will quickly outrun an electric hot water system on a tariff.

If you are using an instantaneous gas hot water heater then it actually consumes a lot more gas than a standard storage gas water heater – more than twice as much. Instantaneous does have the added advantage of not having a pilot light and also being smaller and easier to place – it can be attached to just about any external wall.

Solar Hot Water Systems:

A solar hot water system is one of the most expensive options to have installed, and because they often fail within 10 years, the savings from your power bills won’t always offset the costs of installation. A better option is to have your solar panels set up to feed the power back into the grid so that it offsets your power bill. We can then install an electric hot water system for you which costs about a third of the price, and you get that set up to run on an off-peak tariff, saving yourself even more money on your power bills.

Heat Pumps:

Heat pumps have been over-sold as being efficient, but they actually have a lot of problems in certain climates. If the humidity is bad your heat pump is likely to underperform and have a shortened lifespan. They are expensive to install – 2 or 3 times more than a standard electrical water heater – and they are expensive to repair. The costs involved in replacing the tank or if the compressor dies, it will cost you more to fix than just having a brand new electric system installed, and you’ll be left with a 7-year-old system with a brand-new tank.

Comparing Hot Water Heaters: The Verdict

We believe that an electric hot water system is the most efficient and economical option for majority of homes in the Hervey Bay, Sunshine Coast, Fraser Bay and Bundaberg region. The most economical solution is to have solar panels that feed power back into the grid to offset your power bills, while using an electric heater set on an off-peak tariff.

This may vary slightly in some instances, such as if you have access to town gas, or if you live on a rural property where there is not enough electricity to power your hot water heater.

Some of the most common hot water system faults that we work with include:

  • Fault with the circuit board
  • Fault with the wiring
  • Faulty or worn pressure relief valve (PRV)
  • Leaking drain valve
  • Leaks
  • Faulty or damaged heating element
  • Defective thermostat
  • Anode rod faults

If you are experiencing any of these faults then get in touch with Repair My Hot Water today – our team will be at your door in under 3 hours.

Hot Water System Repair vs Replacement:

If your hot water system is starting to age then it might be more cost effective to replace your entire unit than to repair individual parts. Often sourcing parts for older models is expensive and you end up with a brand-new element on a system that is still 7 or 8 years old. For a bit more money, you can get a whole new system with a 10-year warranty.

A great example of this is a faulty anode rod – the anode rod prevents rust inside the tank. If your anode needs to be replaced then the inside of your tank might have already started rusting; we can replace the anode rod but you’ll still be up for a whole new unit in a year or two due to rust damage.

In cases like this, we will always let you know all of your different options and we’ll share our professional opinion with you as well – whether the system is worth trying to save or whether it would be more cost effective to get a new replacement system with a 10-year warranty.

Benefits of an Electrical Hot Water System:

There are a few core benefits that come from having an electric hot water system. The first major one is the cost of installation – electric systems are generally the cheapest option to have installed on most houses. There are a few exceptions with more rural properties or properties that sit further away from the grid but the additional costs are related to the infrastructure, not the actual system installation.

Another major benefit of electric hot water heaters is that they are economical to run when combined with a tariff. Tariffs are different rates that you are charged to use electricity – most houses by default are on a ‘standard’ tariff where they get charged the same amount for electricity usage no matter what time of day they are using it, but there are other tariffs that charge less for off-peak usage – you can find more information about tariffs in Queensland here. Everyone in Queensland has the right to be on an ‘off peak’ tariff which can be used to power your electrical hot water system saving you significant amounts of money on your electricity bills.

The final major benefit of electric hot water heaters is that you don’t have to worry about running out of hot water if there has been a prolonged period of no sun or your gas bottles are empty and need to be refilled.

Retrofitting:

If you have an existing gas or solar powered hot water heater and would like to swap to an electric system, we can do a retrofit for you. Retrofitting is not as expensive as many plumbers or electricians will have you think – because we attend every single job with a qualified electrician and a plumber, we don’t have to outsource any of the work or co-ordinate schedules between different trades. For us, the job is reasonably quick and simple! Learn more about retrofitting different hot water heaters here.

Benefits of Gas Hot Water Systems:

Gas hot water systems that are connected to town gas supplies can be a very efficient option. They are also often used in rural properties where there is not enough electricity to power the hot water heater as well as all the other appliances.

You do need to be careful with gas systems however, because they are not always the most efficient option – instantaneous gas water heaters for example use significantly more gas than other options. There are also a lot of restrictions with your gas cylinders and where they can be legally placed. Visit our Compare Systems page to learn more about the different hot water systems and which one would best suit your circumstances.

All Brands, All Types:

We can work with both gas bottle systems as well as town gas from lines. Our team are independent which means that we can work with any brand that you prefer, or we can advise you on the best option for your home and budget based on our years of experience in the industry.

Instantaneous Gas Hot Water Heaters:

Are you considering an instantaneous gas hot water heater? If you are then there are several benefits and drawbacks that you should know about before making your decision. Instantaneous gas hot water systems use a lot more gas per hour to heat your water so they aren’t as efficient as standard storage gas water heaters. However, they are often favoured by rental properties because they don’t have a pilot light, so when you gas bottle runs out, the tenant doesn’t have to go and re-light the hot water heater. Another benefit of an instantaneous system is that they take up a lot less room as they are a much smaller box that can be attached to the side of an external wall almost anywhere.

Our team have been working with hot water systems for over 25 years – if you are uncertain which option will be the best solution for your property, we are more than happy to run you through the benefits of each system and help you decide.
